El Jadida

Tired of walking the streets of dirty and polluted Casablanca, we decided to hire a car one day earlier than planned and visit the city of El Jadida. This little port was established by the Portuguese in the 16th century and was described in our guidebook as worth a visit.

Our journey started well – we got fined by a policeman for turning the car where we were not supposed to. A was a bit apprehensive at the beginning, until he got used to the car's particulars. Two hours and a short nap later, we arrived at our destination. Yes, I fell asleep in the car again – it always has this effect on me, thank god I was not the one behind the wheel :-) . Driving in Morocco is relatively safe as long as you refrain from speeding. The locals are a bit chaotic when driving but on the motorway they stick to the speed limits and are relatively civilised.

The little town was very picturesque, we walked along the old walls, right on the shore, enjoying the superb view. There were locals building boats, the weather was good so the colours and contrasts were beautiful. We ended our stay with a short visit to a famous Portuguese water cistern.

Back in Casablanca for the last night, we decided to have dinner in the Moroccan restaurant in our hotel. The choice proved to be wise, the traditional food was excellent and so was the service :-).

We are off to Rabat tomorrow and we’ll have quite an early start too, so I should go to bed. Goodnight!
